Dr Joao Filipe do Rego 1915-2002

Joao Filipe do Rego was  born in Fontainhas, Pangim on 24th August, 1915 to Dr. Antonio Augusto do Rego & Helena Correia Afonso. Joao Filipe lived and studied in Pangim and traveled for the holidays to the picturesque and serene South Goa coastal village of Benaulim from where his mother hailed. In the the distinguished Rego family Joao Filipe's siblings were (late) Aires, Celestial Saldanha, Fr. Renato do Rego, Fr. Vasco do Rego, Fernando do Rego and (late) Teresinha do Rego. The Regos are cousins to the well respected and loved Correia-Afonsos of Benaulim.

Joao Filipe attended the very famous Escola Primaria Massano de Amorim, proceeded to study at the Liceu Nacional, and studied medicine at Escola Medica de Goa from where he graduated in 1938.

On 29th December, 1950 Dr. Joao Filipe married Maria da Piedade Salvador Fernandes from Benaulim. Joao Filipe and Maria da Piedade brought forth six children, all of whom have distinguished themselves admirably. Helena is now Tai Aruna at Pune's Ishaprema Niketan (the Catholic Church's "Home of God's Love" for destitutes and the other less fortunate), Dr. Maria da Piedade (Silveira) is a well known paediatrician at the Goa Medical College in Panjim, Maria de Lourdes  a spinter, Antonio Augusto do Rego an engineer in Bangalore, and Dr. Manuela (Saldanha) an Ophthalmologist who is now settled in Bangalore.

In 1965, two years after the Escola Medica was converted into the Goa Medical College, Dr. Joao Filipe retired from his post of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Escola, and served as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecology to Cosme Matias Menezes Memorial Hospital, Altinho, Panjim.

In 1990, at the age of 75, Dr. Joao Filipe cut back on his hospital visits and continued to serve his patients from his private "consultorio" at Fontainhas.

On 20th May 2002, Dr. Joao Filipe do Rego passed away in Poona while on a visit to the Ishaprema Niketan there. He remains one of Goa's most famous and beloved Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Goa, a pioneer in his field and one who has made all Goans proud with his dedicated service. TGF hopes that the medical community in Goa honours this pioneer and stalwart Goan appropriately.
