Last week in Lisbon :

-jorge de abreu noronha

Jul 18, 2000:

On Wednesday Lisbon's daily "Diario de Noticias" featured an article by journalist Eduardo Mascarenhas reporting his talk with Francisco Sardinha, wherein the Chief Minister of Goa accused the present Consul General of Portugal Dr (Mrs) Vera Fernandes of not being as dynamic as her two predecessors and complained that his son has been waiting for the last two  years for his "Portuguese nationality" file to be processed.

The journalist regretted that he could not get Vera Fernandes's reaction to the accusations as she is presently on vacation in Portugal.

Late in 1994 Carmo D'Souza's book "Angela's Goan Identity" was released in Goa, with a foreword by Ashwin Tombat. Now the book has been translated into Portuguese by Fernanda M. Barros with the title "A identidade goesa de Angela" and published by "Livros Cotovia" with a grant from "Fundacao  Oriente". Also with the sponsorship of this Foundation, the same publishing house brought out an original book in Portuguese titled "Um estranho em Goa" by Angola-born and Brazil-settled Portuguese writer Jose Eduardo Agualusa.

Both these books were released last thursday July 13 at "Casa de Goa" in Lisbon, at the hands of the President of this association Dr. Alfredo Bruto da Costa. After Bruto da Costa's speech and some readings from the two books by a charming young lady and a note of thanks by Agualusa who then  autographed many copies of his book, the large gathering was treated to drinks and Goan snacks while the song and dance group "Ekvat" sang some mandos and dulpods and a Goan girl danced while the group sang the "Hanv Saiba peltoddi vetam" dekhnni. It was a pity that "Fundacao Oriente" didn't provide for Carmo D'Souza's coming from Goa for the release of the translation of his book and that the translator herself was also not present.

The senior librarian of Goa's Central Library Mrs Maria de Lourdes Bravo da Costa Rodrigues, who is now finishing a 3-week training at Lisbon's "Torre do Tombo" National Archives on a scholarship from "Fundacao Oriente", gave a talk on Saturday July 15 on "The present state of the Portuguese language in Goa" for "Clube Vasco da Gama", an association which is still in formation but which has already had some activities like lunch parties and a Konkani course. At the end of the talk those present were treated to "potato  bhaji with pao", "sambarem" and "xeu". Maria de Lourdes published early this year in Panjim a book on Goan cuisine with the title "Tasty Morsels - Goan Food Ingredients & Preparation", which also benefited from a grant of the "Fundacao Oriente".
